Shelley Potter is Professor of Surgical Oncology at Bristol Medical School and Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

Her research focuses on improving outcomes for women undergoing breast cancer surgery through the design and delivery of high-quality, patient-centred collaborative research. She has led several large-scale multicentre studies including iBRA, iBRA-2, TeaM, Brighter, ANTHEM and Pre-BRA which together have established the evidence base for oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery worldwide.

More recently, she had developed an interest in breast cancer treatment personalisation and established BEACON (Breast Cancer Evidence, Advancement and Optimisation Network), a collaboration between Bristol Medical School and Queen’s University Belfast which aims to develop research that improves treatment personalisation, reducing treatment associated morbidity and improving outcomes for patients. This includes the NIHR HTA funded TADPOLE study which aims to compare targeted axillary dissection and axillary node clearance in patients with node positive breast cancer having primary surgery for which she is the Chief Investigator.

Shelley is committed to international collaboration. She co-led the BIG-NCTN PRECEDENT project to develop a core outcome set for locoregional outcome reporting in neoadjuvant breast cancer systemic therapy trials and she is currently co-leading the BCRF funded SIGNAL-Breast project which will establish international research priorities for locoregional treatments in early breast cancer.

Shelley is Royal College of Surgeons of England Surgical Specialty Lead for Breast Surgery and a member of the Association of Breast Surgery Academic and Research Committee and the UK Breast Cancer Studies Group. She is committed to supporting the next generation of clinical academics and is Head of the Severn Deanery/University of Bristol Clinical Academic Training School.
